Brief on Assam Silk

Assam silk denotes the three major types of indigenous wild silks produced in Assam-golden Muga, white Pat and warm Eri silk. The Assam silk industry, now centered in Sualkuchi, is a labor intensive industry.

Muga silk:

Muga silk is the product of the silkworm Antheraea assamensis endemic to Assam. The larvae of these moths feed on som (Machilus bombycina) and sualu (Litsaea polyantha) leaves. The silk produced is known for its glossy fine texture and durability. Due to its low porosity the Muga yarn cannot be bleached or dyed and its natural golden color is retained. This silk can be hand-washed with its lustre increasing after every wash. Very often the silk outlives its owner.A set of mekhela chadors made with Muga silk from Assam arranged around a Jaapi and set on a shawl made with Eri silk.

Pat silk:

Pat silk is produced by silkworms which feed on mulberry (Morus spp.) leaves. It is usually brilliant white or off-white in colour. Its cloth can dry in shadow.

Eri silk:

Eri silk is made by Samia cynthia ricini which feed on leaves of Castor oil plant (Ricinus communis). It is also known as Endi or Errandi silk. Because manufacturing process of Eri allows the pupae to develop into adults and only the open ended cocoons are used for turning into silk, it is also popularly known as non-violent silk. This silk is soft and warm and is popular as shawls and quilts.

This article intends to tell you how silk is formed, which industry it is always applied in and how to find reliable silk supplier.

The raw material of silk is from the little silkworm. There are many kinds of silkworms in nature, but people mainly use home silkworms fed on mulberry leaves to spin cocoons. In addition, there are a variety of wild silkworms, the largest of which is the oak silkworm, it can be fed on wild oak leaves and is artificially raised at outdoors. Silkworms are a kind of amazing insect.

These insects are raised in most areas of China. The domestication and home feed of these insects has a long history of about 5,000 years. The artificial stocking of tussah also originated in China and gradually formed an industry after the Song and Yuan Dynasties.

The Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin's poem "The spring silkworms finish to spin silk until they are dead, that candle burns over to be ash looks like a wax oil to dry." The metaphor of this poem is to the miss of lover to the last minute. In fact, from a biological point of view, the spring silk is not dead when it runs out. It just walks through the larval stage of life and is about to become a silkworm pupa. The life of a silkworm goes through four completely different stages of development: eggs, larvae, pupae and moths. It takes about 40 to 60 days to change from a thin silkworm egg to a larvae. The nhộng tằm larvae goes through four sleeps and four wake-ups until becomes mature silkworm. After becoming a mature silkworm, it spins silk and becomes silkworm pupa, finally it transforms into a moth and the silkworm cocoon is drilled out to lay eggs. This cycle of life triggered the ancient people's associations and reflections on the important issues of life such as heaven and earth, life and death. This also resulted in silkworm worship that it may have a close relationship with the origin of China's silk industry.

The Taihu Lake Region in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River is China's largest silk producing region, accounting for half of the country's output. Mainly concentrated in Suzhou, Hangzhou and Huzhou, known as the three silk cities. Followed by Shaoxing, Nanjing, Jiaxing, Zhenjiang and Changzhou. The Sichuan Basin is China's second silk producing region, whose raw silk production ranks second of only to Zhejiang in our country. The third largest silk producing area is in the Zhujiang Delta.

Silk is a continuous long fiber solidified by the fluid when mature silkworm cocoons. It is a natural fiber. By raising silkworms, when silkworms form cocoons and form pupae, they are ready to emerge as moths. Put silkworm cocoon in hot water and extract silk . A silkworm cocoon can withdraw 800-1200 meters of silk.

Many products and utensils in medical treatment now use this material. After special treatment, it will have the effect of promoting blood circulation and anticoagulation, it can also help the blood delay the effect of clotting. In addition, silk materials such as artificial ligaments, bone materials, artificial tendons, various physiological health products and etc are also used for different tools in medical treatment.

In different industrial projects, its powder can be added to the paint to produce a high-quality paint. These paints can help furniture items maintain a brighter color and a more elegant texture.

In the end, now you must know how silk is formed, which industry silk is applied and how to find reliable silk supplier.
